Riga, Where we have a sunset view of sorts from our hotel window, the Art Nouveau buildings are never ending, the days are longer and colder, and the veggie dumplings and fried cheese are right around the corner.
And that fav resto right around the corner is Plemeni XL located in the Old Town at KalÄ·u 7.
The House of the Black Heads is the iconic spot in Riga.
The Old Town is rather charming with a medieval layout (is not a grid) and colorful squares; and a dash of Art Nouveau.
Army Barracks.
The so-called Three Brothers.
The Soviet stylings of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (1951).
View from our hotel window.
This synagogue with its Egyptian Art Nouveau motifs was just a block from our hotel.
The Freedom Monument (1935) blends Art Deco and Social Realist styles, and honors those killed in the Latvian War of Independence (1918–1920). There is a changing of the guards on the hour.
The Cathedral.
The Radio Latvia building.
Sunset.
Airplane hangers have been converted into the Market Hall, one of which is all meats.
Rainy afternoon - we stay in our room until the rain stops and the clouds move by.
Being one of the last countries in Europe to convert from paganism to Christianity (in the 14th Century), the old pagan/folk symbols can be seen around town.
Although Riga has many Art Nouveau buildings, there are still many traditional wooden houses around.
The last sunset of the trip.

And finally, various Art Nouveau buildings. STOP READING HERE unless you love Art Nouveau. ;-)
Lovely sunsets! I have some of the exact same AN pix, but I stayed in the AN section, so didn't see as much of the old town.
ReplyDeleteHope you're getting over the jet lag...
Jet lag? Hmmmmmmmmmmm. I haven't seen a SAC from the Meckleys. I assume they are lost in space.
