Another Great Hike In Kotor

Another day, another great hike in Kotor; this time across the bay with views across to Kotor, not down.

The weather for yesterday's hike was sunny -  today cloudy with periods of sun.

At times the light and water made magic with Sun-Ling first mistaking the sea for clouds then the sun for the moon.

View of Kotor from across the bay.

I've Googled to no avail. How long ago were these switchback trails constructed? For what reason?

These switchback trails are called "ladders" and are the old mule and horse roads dating back centuries.

The first ladder we hiked is called the Ladder of Cattaro (Kotor in Italian is Cattaro) and is somewhat famous. Currently it's known as the Old Ladder of Cattaro and the parallel modern road is known as the Ladder of Cattaro.

There are references to the Old Ladder of Cattaro in older travel books such as this one: http://www.njegos.org/durham/chapter1.htm. Our turn around point was just short of the village of Njegushi that she describes.

Our second hike was on the Ladder of Franz Joseph, which I am assuming is named after Prince Francis Joseph of Battenberg who married a Montenegrin princess.

BTW Great comment Ed! Thanks! I should have put that information in the blog posts.

Thanks for your leads to the Ladder. Very rugged terrain!
