Our second day-trip from Perugia was to Gubbio, another Umbrian hill town with ancient origins. The bus was almost empty; just us and another couple who we later saw in town begging in front of a church. Hmmm. Gubbio was happening that Sunday with a kite festival and free admission to some of the museums. We also rode the mini gondala - quite fun.
Palazzo dei Consoli.
View from the Palazzo dei Consoli.
The Duomo's interior with unique arches.
And the Ducal Palace, modeled after the one in Urbino, is larger and higher than the Palazzo dei Consoli.
With some cool archaeology going on beneath.
City streets are narrow and piazzas small.
Many of the oldest dwellings have a 2nd, smaller front door with narrow stairs behind - a good defensive arrangement.
A procession headed to the Church of St. Francis where we saw our companions from the bus begging by the front doors.
Looking from the Ancient Roman Theater back to Gubbio.
The Kite Festival was behind the Roman Theater. Cool.
The 7-minute ride on the mini-gondola up to the Basilica of St Ubaldo was lots of fun and with views back to the Kite Festival.
St. Ubaldo's Basilica house's 3 wooden pillars that are "raced" around town once a year on Saint Ubaldo's Day.
And a final view of Gubbio from the bus stop. That's St. Ubaldo's at upper left.
Sun-Ling and John have been traveling the earth since 2008 while blogging, eating vegetarian and vegan, and riding public transportation. We love uphill day hikes, 20th-century architecture, Roman ruins, all bodies of water, local markets, shopping for groceries, aqueducts, miradors, trip planning, blablacar, and more.
