We had planned to visit Girona in March of 2020 and meet up with Marc, a friend-of-a-friend. Marc gave us the tip of visiting Girona during the flower festival, so we arrived in Girona on the first Sunday of the festival. After two years of email communication, we finally met Marc who by now seems like an old friend.
Marc showed us around in Banyoles with its beautiful lake, the very picturesque village of Monells, and lunch at a restaurant in the country, kicking off a very thorough tour of Girona province.
On the AVE (high-speed rail) from Lleida to Girona.
We checked into our hotel (near the train station). Marc picked us up and soon we were enjoying a stroll by the lake in Banyoles, his hometown.
Lake of Banyoles is not only beautiful, and treasured by the community, it's a mecca for outdoor activities on and off the water.
After sitting out a brief shower in an outdoor cafe, Marc showed us the picture-perfect Plaça.
By the time we had a delicious late lunch at El Racó d'en Pep near Sant Gregori we had become "old friends".
Preparing the Pa Amb Tomàquet (Pan con Tomate) - an instant favorite.
After lunch, Marc drove us to Monells, an extremely scenic village within cycling distance of his home in Sorria.
The Plaça.

Sun-Ling and John have been traveling the earth since 2008 while blogging, eating vegetarian and vegan, and riding public transportation. We love uphill day hikes, 20th-century architecture, Roman ruins, all bodies of water, local markets, shopping for groceries, aqueducts, miradors, trip planning, blablacar, and more.
